Today we will be reviewing one of the best gaming laptops for the year 2017, the Asus rog trix gl502VT gaming laptop this laptop is aimed towards gamers who are looking for something with a dedicated graphics card in a compact design this laptop is perfect for anyone who’s on the go who wants something portable they can just slip it into their backpack now this does pack a punch don’t let its size fool you it is capable of running most games and comfortably at 1080p
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 Design and Materials:
so here’s my review cases rogue strict continues the trend of getting its inspiration from a stealth fighter jet looks very similar to its bigger brother the g7 52 it has a brushed metal lid with angled lines but instead of being in copper this time they’re in neon orange now the one thing I did notice when I opened that lives how easily it collects fingerprints rest of the laptop is made out of plastic and that includes the brush deck that looks like metal plastic is a better option for most larger laptops and it does help keep the weight down the string only weighs four point eight pounds which is a little bit heavier than the razor blade but more than half the weight of the 17 inch row g 7 52
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 connection ports:
in terms of ports on the left it comes with a USB type-c port USB 3.0 port hdmi mini display port Ethernet jack and a power connector on the right there’s an audio jack two more USB 3.0 ports one full-size SD card slot and a noble log the street comes in two models but in different configurations but the main difference is that the GL 50 to VT which is the laptop i’m reviewing use a gtx 970 em graphics card while the GL 502 v why use a nine ATM
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 specs:
my review it also comes packed with an intel quad core i7 6700 HQ processor 16 gigabytes of ddr4 ram a 15.6 inch 1920 x 1080 Full HD display and a 1 terabyte hard drive this is the entry level model and retails for 1400 hours us ok so getting inside is fairly easy all you have to do is unscrew the screws on the bottom and your end of the first thing you’re going to notice is to fans with a bunch of heat pipes running back and forth those fans are spray painted neon orange in order to keep up with the theme on the top right you have your hard drive which can be easily swapped out with an SSD drive if you want quicker speeds on top of that you have your eight gigabyte sim right in the middle which is swappable and the other a king of knights inn is somewhere else on the motherboard that requires a little bit more work in order to get to the good thing is there is a pci nvme SSD storage space in case you want additional storage or if you want the fastest storage possible the display on
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 Display & graphics:
this laptop is really good it’s full HD with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 it’s an IPS panel and has very good viewing angles in fact it has a hundred and seventy degree field of view so you have a buddy over there going to be able to see everything on your screen there’s very little flex to it and has a matte finish so you’re not going to get any reflections now the cool thing I did notice about this displays that it gets very very bright and only have to keep it to about sixty percent in order to get a good user experience now when i was playing do my nose how good and accurate the colors war I can see all the intricate details of what’s on the screen especially in a dark environment above that display is a 1 point 2 megapixel front facing camera is not that great at all in fact it’s very noisy but if you need to make the odd video conferencing call it should do the job fine
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 Audio:
so for audio it’s using ice power speakers which is a subsidiary of bang & olufsen a very reputable audio company the place on the deck which means they’re forward-facing which is always a good thing i did find the highest to get nice and loud but the meds felt washed out and the base is not existed but i think most hardcore gamers are going to want to use a good pair of headphones
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 keyboad:
above the speaker’s lies a full-size chiclet keyboard with a numeric keypad the WASD keys are any on orange to remind gamers where to place their fingers the typing experience is good but not great but the gaming experience on the keyboard itself is actually really good the keys have a 1.6 millimeter travel distance so they’re quite tactile and there’s three levels of red backlighting now the only issue I have with this keyboard is the placement of the arrow keys is right beside the shift key the arrow key sometimes get in the way
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 touch pad and mouse:
the touchpad is a good size my fingers never felt crappy I had always had enough room to move them around kids to zoom scrolling all work great and also has pawned detection when you’re using a third-party mouse so if your palm is resting on it it doesn’t click or get in the way when you’re playing a game now it’s not the greatest touchpad i did find the accuracy to be a little off I think most people who buy this laptop for gaming will want to use their own third-party mouse
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 Graphic card:
this is a gaming laptops what does come with its own dedicated graphics card which means going to handle every day productivity tasks with ease i had no problems editing 4k video the only thing I suggest is using a separate scratch disk so it’ll run a lot smoother on top of that i had no problems having 15 and 16 chrome tabs open watching more than one full HD video and the laptop handle it like a champ
running a video game on ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71:
the first game I ran was Over watch -pc it’s a brand new game by blizzard it’s a first person shooter and it’s very addictive now the thing about over watches they cap the frames per second so if you’re using a modern with a 60 refresh rate the most FPS you can get it can be 10 above that which is 70 so I was getting 70 frames per second at 1080p ultra the whole time without dropping whatsoever now also i just want to mention to a lot of gamers out there who have an asus rope if you have the aces game fist software installed on your laptop and your having issues with overwatch I suggest removing it completely I found that my latency actually dropped from three to four hundred down to about 50 actually read it on some forums and it seems to be a common issue the next game i tried was Doom a 1080p on high settings and had no issues running between 40 and 50 frames per second and the last game i tried out was Heroes of the storm is getting about 70 frames per second when there was no intense fighting going on the frame rate would drop to about 40 to 50 frames per second when the battle started getting very intense and I was running it at 1080p extreme I’m sure if you reduced it to alter even hi you can get around 60 frames per second
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 heat remark:
one thing I notice is that the top of the deck was getting really really hot so I did he test it was averaging temperatures of a hundred and twenty degrees Fahrenheit which is really high in my books i usually like the heat to be below a hundred and ten or even below a hundred on the back is averaging about a hundred and twenty which is lower but overall it’s a major concern for long-term use
ASUS ROG STRIX GL502VT-DS71 batery life:
finally the battery life of 2018 lamtop and I was really shocked out how good the battery life was for a gaming laptop I was getting over five hours of battery life before needing a full charge and this consists of things of browsing the web watching movies and doing general productivity tasks
Overall:
alright so here my closing thoughts this is a great portable compact gaming rig now obviously it’s not going to be as portable as something like an ultrabook or two in one device it’s not supposed to be but for a gaming laptop with a dedicated graphics card with this much power it’s pretty compact and it’s great for students who want a gaming laptop where they can carry around from dorm room the dorm room or from class to class or you know someone who just loves to game is always traveling a lot on top of that you get a great screen which offers amazing color and accuracy you have lots of ports to hook it up to anything you want to including an ethernet jack and on top of that it’s very easy to upgrade you can swap out the memory you can add an nbme SSD and you can change up the hard drive now there are some things I don’t like this audio could be a bit better the webcam is not that great but my biggest concern is the overheating it gets up to a hundred and twenty eight degrees Fahrenheit which is pretty hot I don’t know what the long-term use is going to be like but I’m sure it can’t be good.
